The four tiers correspond to four distinct workflows we see in the data. The Free tier is for one-off checks: a student verifying a single application essay, a parent checking their kid's college statement, a freelance writer running a quick scan before submitting to a client. Five checks per day is enough for that pattern; if you find yourself bumping the limit, the Student plan covers the next bracket of usage. The Student plan ($6/month, $3/month with verified .edu email) is for individuals who use the tool regularly during a term — pre-submission checks on essays, draft revision passes, and access to the sentence-level highlighting that makes the heatmap actually actionable.
The Teacher plan ($12/month) is the inflection point: unlimited essay checks, batch upload of up to 50 essays at once, and CSV export to drop into a gradebook. If you teach a writing-heavy course of 30+ students per section, the math works out to under a dollar per student per term — substantially cheaper than the per-essay equivalent on competitor pricing. The Institutional plan is the only quoted tier; it covers SSO, LMS plugins, the Data Processing Agreement on your institution's paper, and per-tenant data isolation. Pricing is by enrolled-student FTE, with academic-year and multi-year discounts. We don't list the number publicly because it depends heavily on your retention configuration, your SSO provider, and the state-specific data-privacy addenda you require.
A few things competitors charge for and we don't. The free tier is genuinely free, forever. No credit card, no trial expiration, no surprise gating after three uses. We have no incentive to push casual users into a paid plan that doesn't fit their actual workflow. Sentence-level highlighting is included on all paid tiers — some competitors put their equivalent feature behind a higher tier. The integrity-grade PDF report (cryptographically signed, suitable for academic-integrity hearings) is included on Teacher and Institutional plans at no extra cost; some competitors quote this as a premium add-on. API access is included on Institutional plans for institutions that want to build their own integrations — no per-request pricing on top of the seat license.
Most institutional procurement we see falls into one of three buckets. SSO-first deployments use ClassLink or Clever (K-12) or SAML 2.0 with your existing IdP (higher-ed); typical kickoff-to-rollout time is 4-6 weeks. Compliance-first deployments require state-specific addenda (SOPIPA, Ed Law 2-d, SOPPA, etc.) and a SOC 2 Type II review; we sign these as defaults rather than negotiation, so the legal review tends to compress to 1-2 weeks. Pilot-first deployments run a single department or college through the tool for one semester before broader commitment; we price single-department pilots separately from campus-wide deployment. The full institutional process is documented on /for-institutions with a one-form intake at /contact.
