From paste to evidence in three steps

How an essay check actually goes.

1

Paste the essay

Up to 3,000 characters free, no signup. Drag-and-drop .docx and .pdf supported.

2

Read the heatmap

Sentence-level red/gold/green with confidence bands. Cluster, not single number.

3

Have a real conversation

Take the signed PDF to the student, the dean, the editorial board. Defensible evidence.

Built for the people who actually grade essays.

Faculty, admissions readers, academic-integrity officers, editors, the people who read hundreds of essays a week don't want another 'AI probability: 83%.' They want evidence.

Sentence-level signal

See exactly which sentences look model-generated, with per-sentence perplexity and burstiness. Not a single opaque percentage.

Academic-register trained

Our detector is fine-tuned on student essays, personal statements, and literature papers, not Reddit posts. Register-aware.

Model-aware confidence

Different scores for GPT-4o vs Claude 4 vs Gemini 2.5. Our benchmark updates every 14 days with new flagship releases.

Hybrid-draft detection

Most cheating isn't pure AI, it's 'write a draft then edit.' We estimate the ratio of human-edited vs model-native text.

Privacy by default

Text never leaves the Cloudflare edge in a persisted form. No training on user submissions. No silent logging of content.

Free, until you need more

3,000 characters free per request. Sign in for higher quotas and saved history. Institutional plans available.

What you actually get back

A report you can take to a conversation.

Not a single opaque percentage. Each sentence gets its own AI-likelihood score, color-coded so you can see at a glance where the signal concentrates. The headline number is just the summary.

  • Red sentences: high-confidence AI-like prose. Defensible to flag.
  • Gold sentences: mixed signal. Probably worth a look but not damning.
  • Green sentences: strong human-voice markers. The "grandmother button jar" example is the kind of detail models rarely produce.

Frequently asked questions

Is aiessaydetector.ai free to use?
Yes. The detector, plagiarism checker, and grammar tools are free for essays up to 3,000 characters. Sign in for higher limits and saved history.
How accurate is AI detection?
Our model is trained specifically on academic writing, essays, application drafts, research paragraphs. We report a confidence score at sentence level, not just a single yes/no verdict, so educators can see exactly where AI signal concentrates. Independent evaluations on a held-out academic corpus put our AUC above 0.94.
Do you store the text I paste in?
No. Submitted text is processed in memory on Cloudflare's edge, used once for the score, and discarded. We do not train on user-submitted text.
Which AI models can you detect?
GPT-4, GPT-4o, Claude 3/3.5/4, Gemini 1.5/2.5, Llama 3/4, Mistral, Qwen, DeepSeek, plus hybrid human-AI drafts. We continuously retrain on each new flagship model within two weeks of release.
Can a teacher fail a student based on this score?
No detector is a court of law. We publish sentence-level evidence so educators can have an informed conversation with the student, not a unilateral verdict. Our methodology page explains the limits.
